the hills have eyes

wow, it's been a while since my last post. the past months were like a roller coaster ride of emotions. thank Bathala for the outdoors to help keep my sanity hehehe. moving on...
two weeks ago, got a tip from a friend that a family of Philippine Eagle Owls (PEO) was spotted in the compound of Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs. the site, which was discovered by the national artist Botong Francisco in the 60's, is a rock shelter that features 127 figures of man and animals engraved in the rock wall believed to be as old as 3,000 B.C. it is considered as the oldest man-made art in the country. have been guiding friends and colleagues before on this site but this time, i was so excited again to visit the area because of the chance of seeing again a family of PEOs. Anne joined me on this trip and we just commuted to the site.
and.... wow!!!
we were speechless when we saw the owlet spread its wings, trying to test if she (or he) can already fly. a few feet away, mom was on guard, watching her young and us. too bad, dad was not around during our visit.
PEO is endemic to the Philippines and definitely one of my top favorites :-)
we exchanged stories with fellow birders who were also in the area that time, mesmerized by the rockwall engraves and have a quick tour inside the mini-museum within the compound. lifer for Anne and my second time to see a family of PEOs.
Good year :-)
